    What you failed to point out is hardwired into the router. ALWAYS faster than WiFi. But, it requires you to run an Ethernet cable wire to the device. Sometimes more difficult. Other times, not so much. Ethernet cable to another access point is relatively cheap. Maybe you can talk about Elon Musk StarLink. Internet plans starting at $120/mo. Maybe connect from ANYWHERE? Don’t be tethered to your home. And another video on what you really need. Streamed video buffer. Maybe gamming you need faster internet. What justifies a new wifi or modem?

    Next time I have to overhaul my home network, I'll just buy Access Point and make DiY router... mid-range Asus router becomes so expensive that it might make sense if I just make my own router and simply use my old Asus router as access point. The Asus BE98 Pro is just too expensive for me to justify. NetGear are so hit and miss, having had to return two Nighthawk routers to BestBuy because of a known firmware issue that bricked the routers after a successful update. NetGear support offered to RMA them for one with a slightly newer revision of the hardware to solve the issue but they should have recalled the original hardware version instead of wasting customers time. Personally, I prefer external antennas because they can be pointed, at least somewhat, in the direction needed. Asus has a great GUI and even better extended life support through community based firmware, like Merlin.

    As many have alread noted, this was/is a great video.. Many good pieces of information that most don't even think about. I have the RT-AX86S which is almost identical to the 86U. I'm trying to find out if there is a way to connect the WAN/Internet connection through a WIFI connection (in this case from Starlink) instead of using Ethernet. It whould be soooooo much easier to use WIFI instead of running a very long, and difficult, Ethernet CAT 6 cable. Finally, and I'm sure others are wondering, how can one tell the OS of their 86U/S. I thought I was using ASUSWRT but I think it is Merlin, I just don't know how to tell. Thank you in advance should you decide to respond.

    • @Behfor
      @Behfor 6 днів тому

      I would do a packet capture on the desktop in question while pinging it through a VPN connection. If I see ping requests but there are no replies, this tells me that the desktop itself is blocking them. It's most likely the firewall blocking requests from other network addresses.

    I surely could not take advantage of WiFi 7 at all. For me WiFi 7 is not even for cosumers anymore, it is for prosumers and corporates. Do not get me wrong, I sure believe that faster is better but let's get real... who the heck needs 9 Gbps total connection or imagine any device that will use almost saturate 6 Gbps connection at a time. If I remember the most bandwidth intensive is video streaming. Even if you stream 4K video, it uses 50 Mbps. At 6 Gbps, it means you need to transfer 750 MB/s at a time... you need full NVMe NAS to saturate the bandwidth I really wonder what else has WiFi 7 offers besides more bandwidth? I mean... it sure offers better latency, just how much better latency?

    • @Behfor
      @Behfor 10 днів тому

      Ok, so basically, Wi-Fi is a shared medium, meaning that the 6 Gbps you mentioned is shared between all connected devices. Therefore, we should not assume that each device is capable of using 6 Gbps. Instead, if you have, let's say, 50 devices on your network, each one can use up to 6 Gbps / 50, which is roughly 120 Mbps. So, long story short, that extra bandwidth means more Wi-Fi capacity, allowing more devices to use the network simultaneously. With the growing number of smart home devices, this can be very helpful. Thanks.

    Consider that IoT devices and alternate networks come into play. ZigBee uses the same frequency as CH1 and may cause interference. Some Wi-Fi IoT devices must see the same channel as configured always.
